What makes Twitter so valuable?? How can it be monetized?
The answer is in its “real time” data and soon Twitter Search will be enhanced to take advantage of this gold mine. Twitter Search will soon start crawling the links that people tweet and index them. Instead of a string of textual tweets, the search results will also include millions of web pages. The content of these web pages will also be indexed too. (exactly what Google does).
Many have tried, and no one is going to beat Google anytime soon, but the advantage that Twitter Search will have is its speed. Google can take a while to index content but with the real time tweets, the results can be almost instant.
Another interesting thing is that it will use a reputation ranking system to display results. I can only assume that this ranking system will be based on number of followers, retweets etc.
Just as Google makes its money from paid advertising, Twitter Search should be able to do the same.
Although the details of how this is all going to work remain to be seen, such as how to filter out all the spam and will it bog down with all the data, but the direction of Twitter Search is very interesting. Will Google find a way to beat them at this new game of “real time” search or just buy them?
