There just doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day anymore, especially around the holidays. I always seem to be squeezing in my domaining between work, family, friends etc. On Christmas Eve morning while everyone was still sleeping, I decided to try to get an hour or two in, working on one of my projects.
Before I even got the laptop booted my 10 year old daughter came downstairs snuggled up beside me and said “What you doin’ Dad, working on a site?” I replied, “Yeh Honey, just for a little bit. You want to watch TV while I work for awhile?” and to my surprise she said, “No, I want to learn about these domain things you do, can I have one?” Then it hit me, wow my 10-year old wants to learn about something. She’s not asking me to watch TV, play the Wii or Webkinz, she wants to learn about domains!
Without even thinking anymore about why, I just went into explaining what a domain name was, how its used and what you can do with one. I asked what she thought would be a good domain or website and what she would want to tell others about. She immediately said that she was helping Mom make dinner the night before and that she really liked what they made. She said that other people would like to know how to make this particular meal as well, how about a domain and website about this recipe. Great idea!
I did a quick search to find out if people looked for this recipe and if the domain was available. The recipe was indeed searched for and the name was available in dot org. Yippee! Now my daughter and I have a project we can work on together while she is off school this week.
I can’t think of a better way to spend time with my daughter than teaching her about domains and developing websites and giving her something where she can experience work and reward and possibly learn a little bit about failure and how to learn from it.
As the excitement of new toys and gifts wears off, think about introducing a kid to domaining. They could become the next big domainer!
