Mystery Domain Auction is “No More”

January 5th, 2009 | Filed Under: Latest Headlines | No Comments

The Mystery Domain Auction is “no more” according to Jonathan on his site at DNXpert. He has refunded all bids and paid all commissions to affiliates. It appears as though the site was hosted in the US and according to his legal advisers, it was in his best interest to shut it down.

No matter what you thought about this little experiment, it definitely got some attention and publicity for him. I would loved to have seen the outcome. I’m not sure about the legalities of such an auction but it might be a blessing in disguise that it was such a long auction and that he had time to think about it and end it before completion. If it were a shorter auction as I suggested, and already ended, he might not have been so lucky to avoid legal trouble if there was any.

Anyways, he created quite a buzz within the domaining community! Read the entire story here in John’s own words. Best of Luck to him.

Beware of Twitter Phishing Scam

January 4th, 2009 | Filed Under: Latest Headlines | No Comments

In case you haven’t already heard, some idiots have come up with a phishing scam to dupe Twitter users. The scam comes in the form of a Twitter Direct Message. Twitter is aware and blocking the offending site but I’m sure there will be more phishing attacks to come. Read more about it here.

Day 2 of the “domaining revolution”

January 2nd, 2009 | Filed Under: Latest Headlines | 3 Comments

Day 2 of the domaining revolution, now revealed as the Mystery Domain Auction, is upon us. It appears the bidding frenzy of day 1 has slowed a bit. My .45 cent bid yesterday was outbid before I got the confirmation. Today, bidding has been relatively slow and has been sitting at slightly over $2.00 for a while now.

I’m not sure how many hits this site is getting a day, (maybe Jonathan can shed some light here) but I think bidding is a great way to get exposure for a link to a domain name, domain auction, or

Take a kid domaining this week

December 26th, 2008 | Filed Under: Uncategorized | No Comments

There just doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day anymore, especially around the holidays. I always seem to be squeezing in my domaining between work, family, friends etc. On Christmas Eve morning while everyone was still sleeping, I decided to try to get an hour or two in, working on one of my projects.

Before I even got the laptop booted my 10 year old daughter came downstairs snuggled up beside me and said “What you doin’ Dad, working on a site?” I replied, “Yeh Honey, just for a little bit. You want to watch TV while I work for awhile?” and to my surprise she said, “No, I want to learn about these domain things you do, can I have one?” Then it hit me, wow my 10-year old wants to learn about something. She’s not asking me to watch TV, play the Wii or Webkinz, she wants to learn about domains!

Time to Buy, Hold and Develop?

December 20th, 2008 | Filed Under: Uncategorized | No Comments

With the recent downturn in all of the worlds economies, domains have not been immune to declining values either. In the TRAFFIC Down Under auction, I saw some real nice deals go down. I don’t mean deals for the seller, but the buyer.

We all know that when it comes to assets, you try to buy low and sell high. Is it now time to concentrate on acquisitions rather than sales? With the trend towards development, I myself have started to think that it might be more prudent to try and snag up some deals rather than selling. Fortunately domaining is not my main source of income, so I can take advantage of this down market and find some deals of my own.

Although I will still continue to sell some of my domains, I plan on really keeping an I eye out for bargains that might be great sales 3-5 years from now or nice domains for development.

SEO vs COM

December 10th, 2008 | Filed Under: Uncategorized | No Comments

Alan over at Newfound Names had a great find yesterday that probably stunned most domainers. The site BlackFriday.info had about 4 times the traffic as BlackFriday.com. 4+ million visitors compared to 1.3 million visitors. Why??

Could it be that more people typed in BlackFriday.info than BlackFriday.com? Did the owner spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in advertising? Is he just the luckiest domain owner in the world? What’s worth more the .info version or the .com version? Did the owner concern himself more with SEO or COM???? How dare he.

This google search for Black Friday shows that the owners of the top 3 sites on the first results page just don’t get the dot com thing either. Whats wrong with these guys! Don’t they know that dot com is king!
